Internships and Placements
Internships and Placements at NCEO
At the National Centre for Earth Observation, we are committed to inspiring and supporting the next generation of scientists. Our internships and placements provide hands-on opportunities to explore Earth Observation and environmental science in real-world settings.
We collaborate with organisations like the Nuffield Research Placements programme and CENTA through the NERC Research Experience Placement (REP) scheme, connecting cutting-edge science with real-world applications and delivering exceptional learning opportunities.
Previous projects we’ve developed through students :
- Developing an Environmental Digital Twin Demonstrator: Exploring “what-if” scenarios for environmental decision-making and creating tools for outreach and education.
- A Laboratory Study of Nitrous Oxide (N₂O): Hands-on spectroscopy research at the SPENSER facility, generating critical data for atmospheric remote sensing.
- Developing the UK Observational Network to Monitor Net Zero Progress: Analysing CO₂ and CH₄ data to track emissions and refine monitoring strategies.
- Atmospheric Spectroscopy: Investigating uncertainties in spectroscopic data critical for monitoring atmospheric trace gases using satellite remote sensing.
In 2025, NCEO will:
- Welcome the return of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE): Offering paid research internships for 2nd and 3rd-year University of Leicester students. This programme is ideal for students eager to explore careers in Earth Observation and related fields while gaining valuable experience alongside experts in the field.
- Host four students through transformative programmes: The 1000 Black Interns programme and In2Science, both focused on expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups in STEM.
- CENTA placements: NCEO hopes to welcome more applicants for these impactful placements in 2025.
Whether you’re a school student, undergraduate, or aspiring scientist, NCEO’s internships and placements provide a supportive platform to develop skills, explore career pathways, and contribute to impactful research.
