About NCEO
The National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) is an internationally leading, research centre, located in the UK and dedicated to long-term studies and exploitation of satellite and remote sensing Earth Observation (EO) data for our planet’s health and sustainability.
Our Mission and Vision
Our mission is to harness the power of Earth Observation to generate new knowledge about the physical, chemical, and biological systems of planet Earth, advancing our understanding of current environments and how they may change in the future.
Our vision is to push the frontiers of Earth Observation and Earth System science, contributing key technical advance and scientific development that with appropriate action can aid delivery of a healthy, productive, and resilient environment for all.
Our Research
We generate new knowledge which can underpin UK Environmental Earth System science and provide trusted expert support to the UK environmental science community, industry, government and the public; our impact has been recognised in awards, evaluated impact cases and strategies.
Our internationally excellent research is focussed on delivering necessary, novel and insightful long-term datasets, formulations for assimilating data into models and new space mission concepts for observing the Earth. Our leading science includes a focus on carbon cycles at global and regional carbon scales; coupled energy and water cycle research; land-atmosphere exchanges in different ecosystems, and climate change.
Our Values and Social Responsibility
We are committed to promoting responsible research and innovation practices in step with NERC and its parent body United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI). NCEO staff are expected to be responsible and accountable.
NCEO are dedicated to promoting social responsibility across all NCEO locations and all areas of our research and operations.
Our People and History
NCEO’s capabilities are shared between five scientific core units supported by additional expert scientists at other research organisations. NCEO capabilities sit alongside two scientific facilities and a data centre.
The NCEO Directorate is at the University of Leicester, co-located with NCEO Director Professor John Remedios, and at the University of Reading, Imperial College and King’s College London.
Our Community
NCEO is committed to supporting UK and international colleagues to make the most of increasingly impactful observations from satellites in space. Community support is a critical element of NCEO activity.
NCEO works very closely with interested UK organisations through strategic workshops, co-organisation of national EO conferences, networks and business clubs, provision of data and instrument facilities, training and collaborative projects.
