BIOMASS Facts

- BIOMASS is the first satellite that will study the world’s forests in 3-dimensions using a P-band tomographic radar
- It will provide measurements of above ground biomass and canopy height at 200m resolution, and areas of forest clearing at 50m resolution
- Measure the amount of wood in branches, as well as tree trunks, reducing uncertainties in carbon stored in forests
- Provide a global map of biomass every six months
- BIOMASS is a UK-backed ESA mission and part of ESA’s Earth Explorers programme -Launching on 29th April 2025!
- Prof Shaun Quegan, of the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and the University of Sheffield, is the lead scientist and conceived the mission concept in 2005 with Dr Thuy Le Toan of the Centre d’Etudes Spatiales de la Biosphère (CESBIO), Toulouse
- Airbus (UK), the prime contractor, built the BIOMASS satellite in Stevenage, UK

Satellite Missions
Observation from satellite missions play a crucial role in monitoring climate change by providing comprehensive and continuous observations of Earth system components
NCEO scientists are involved with several upcoming satellite missions as Mission Advisory Group members where they have a leading or collaborative role in mission conception, developing sensor properties, system analysis, data analysis, modelling, algorithm development or validation activities.
