NCEO Staff Courses
Training Programmes
As part of our commitment to staff development our Staff Training Programme has been designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives necessary to excel in their roles and make meaningful contributions to our shared mission.
During the training, participants will engage with online, self-paced induction modules designed to provide a thorough understanding of NCEO’s mission, methodologies, and the significance of Earth observation data.
In addition to the online modules, participants will have the opportunity to participate in an immersive induction tour. Hosted at one of our specialised data hubs, this tour offers a first hand experience of the journey of data, from its initial capture via remote sensors to its storage, manipulation, modelling, and interpretation processes. Through this tour, participants gain valuable insights into the intricate processes involved in mitigating climate change and contributing to environmental sustainability.
Induction Programme
Our Induction programme consists of four modules and is designed to inform staff and students about the role that NCEO plays in the national EO landscape and its contributions to the Earth observation community.
The programme includes an online, self-paced induction module that explains what we do, how we do it, as well as an introduction to our varied personnel and specialist institutions.
Induction Tour
NCEO staff can enjoy an In-Person induction tour at the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) based at Harwell, Oxford.
Jointly managed by NCEO and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), CEDA is the home of the supercomputer JASMIN a high-performance computer used by NCEO staff to process and analyse Earth Observation data. The induction tour introduces staff and students to the range of EO data used within NCEO and the different sensing methods, from ground-based measurements to satellite remote sensing. The tour also gives the opportunity to visit the labs and clean rooms of RAL Space at Harwell where Earth Observation satellites such as MicroCarb and EarthCARE are built and tested prior to launch.
NCEO members should contact the NCEO Training Officer to sign up to the tour which takes once a year.
Sustainability Online Training
This interactive self-paced sustainability module for all NCEO staff, helps them to consider the areas of there research or activities that contribute to NCEO’s carbon footprint whilst learning ways to reduce their impact.
As an environmental research centre, sustainability is a key consideration of NCEO’s day-to-day activities and wider programmes. The module covers the fundamentals of carbon accounting and how it relates to NCEO’s Environmental Sustainability policy, key areas for reducing the emissions in the workplace, and key climate change facts and figures to equip staff with the tools required to make meaningful change.
Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence for Earth observation – NEODAAS Online Training
Our hosted facility NEODAAS, have pooled their specialism and put together an excellent introductory Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence training package that will allow our researchers to work at their own pace through this online training, in order to gain an insight into machine learning possibilities in application to EO data.
NCEO members should contact the NCEO Training Officer to access the course materials and include details of supervisor, PI and/or NCEO institution.
NCEO Researchers’ Forum
We hold a annual two-day training event for PhD and Early Career Researchers at our Head Office, Space Park Leicester.
The training provides an excellent opportunity to learn about a particular topic (previous topics have included Science Communication, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, Impact and Data Visualisation), meet researchers from others NCEO hubs, network and take part in fun team building events.
Contact the NCEO Training Officer for details on the next Researcher’s Forum in 2025.
